The INDEX is proud to publish a daily syndicated press release together with unique news articles that we feature.
We consider ourselves to be the community source of information for business both locally and internationally.
The INDEX has been in continuous publication since 1901 in one format or another. We strive to provide our readers with the best of local business news.
Originally, The INDEX, known as The Mitchell INDEX celebrated its 113th birthday May 3, 2014.
George Ellsworth Mark started the paper in Gering under the name of “The Nebraska Homestead” in 1893 but moved it to Mitchell in 1901 and changed the name to “The Mitchell INDEX”. The “Lyman Leader” and the “Morrill Mail” newspapers have since been incorporated with it into “The INDEX.” There have been just five owners of the newspaper since it began, George and Maggie Mark (1901-1944), Forest and Verna Snyder (1944-1965), Bryce and Maxine Wilkins (1965-2003), Chuck and Margy Karpf (2003-2014) and Chabella Guzman (2014 to present). Now, The Index has kept pace with modern times and is exclusively online and focusses on local business news.
